Only Know--Amy
Only know
“Only hate the road when you’re missing home.” Just like when I study abroad, I started missing home. That’s my favorite line in “Let Her Go” written by Passenger. The poem talks about that someone broke up with his girlfriend, and then noticed that he still loves her until he lets her go. The overall tone of this poem is regretting, ruminating and sad. It tries to make people reflect that people need to cherish what they have right now, and do not lose it. This poem makes me feel the same empathy, because when I read the poem, I could relate to my own experience. Not only studying abroad, but also “Only know you've been high when you're feeling low”. Everytime I listened this poem always makes me thinking deeply. It often gives me some enlightenment, and that is why I like it.
There are some repetitions that make this poem more rhythmic. There are some attractive sentences because not only is there repetition, there is parallelism. Each sentence is short but profound. “You only need the light when it's burning low. Only miss the sun when it starts to snow. Only know you love her when you let her go. Only know you've been high when you're feeling low.” The poet writes something that happens everyday, but we rarely notice. If we think back, we will figure out that the poet is right. For example, “Only know you've been high when you're feeling low” reflects myself sometimes. When I work hard and have a goal, and I change to a higher goal when I finished my last goal, because I feel I need to work harder. The theme of this poem is cherish what you have and do not lose them. Just like the character who breaks up with his girlfriend feels really sad about that because he notices he still loves her. The poem tries to remind people that they don't know how important something is until it's lost.
I like the story that this poem brings, “Let Her Go”, just continue one's life. Love always plays an important role in our lives. However, we cannot define the poem only as a chant of lost love. In this song, our minds are constantly flashing images; There are snow and sun, “Only miss the sun when it starts to snow”; There are dreams and hometown, “Only hate the road when you're missing home”; There are parents gradually far away from us; There is the original intention that has been forgotten. People always knowing what we had, but we thought we wouldn't lose it. “Let Her Go”, could express as when you lost you know cherish, or as release of letting go.
People always find happiness and meaning in hindsight. Everyone has experiences, but also because of these precious experience has a deep understanding of cherishing.
